15 Oct, 2022, By Tanvi Sharma

NEET Attempts

The candidates appearing for the NEET exam often ask the question about how many times they can appear for the same or what is the maximum number of NEET attempts that an aspirant is eligible for. It is important to have coherence in regard to the NEET attempts to plan your preparation accordingly. The NEET attempt limit has the students still baffled over the same.

In the preceding years, there had been a diminution in the number of NEET attempts and the age limit of the NEET aspirants. The administration of the NEET exam is never constant but dynamic. And being an aspirant it is important that you are familiar with the recent change in its events.

So, to help you understand better, the given write-up will fill you in on the past and current events in regard to the NEET attempts limit.

NEET attempts: Concatenation in the preceding years

In the year 2017 major opposition was faced by the students when the CBSE introduced an upper-age limit to the maximum NEET attempts without any prior notice. It was, later on, made clear that the upper limit for the reserved category was 30 and for the unreserved category it was 25, and the number of NEET attempts was restricted to a maximum of 3 attempts. Later in 2017, the Supreme court nullified this rule and re-introduced it with certain modifications in NEET 2018.

The rule of a maximum of 3 NEET attempts was revoked and it was announced that the aspirants could appear for the NEET exam as many times as authorized.

Another dispute was seen in the year 2019 when the open school students/ NIOS students were barred from taking the NEET exam. Prior to this announcement made by the MCI, these students were permitted to take the NEET exam.

This was withdrawn later in 2019 and the norms rolled back to its older form in which the NIOS students to were again allowed to take up the NEET exam.

Another major issue rose concerning Biology as an additional subject. Candidates who had biology as their additional subject in classes 11th and 12th  were restricted from appearing for the NEET exam. The norm was then later revoked and the aspirants were again made eligible for the NEET exam.

How many times a candidate can appear for the NEET exam as per NEET 2023?

As per NTA, the regulatory body of the NEET exam, there is no restriction on the number of NEET attempts. The NTA made a statement that reads  “There is no cap for the number of attempts”.

As a result, the rule of 3 attempts was revoked too permanently.
